Winning in Cheyenne was akin to earning Olympic gold, and every cattle roping title since 1897 had been claimed by a Wyoming cowboy. Outsiders and underdogs, the paniolo’s – with flowers around the brims of their hats – shocked everyone by taking first, third, and fifth places. At a time of uncertainty in the world, these men became instant heroes.
